1) open the original file, select (highlight) the first 1/3 then Copy (Edit menu or Command C).

2) open a new blank document (Excel or a word processor document if CSV) and Paste

3) save the new document

None of my business, but why do you need to split it into multiple smaller files -- not a common requirement? Mac version of word.
